"In Phlegethon-Milczenie II (2005), an installation incorporating sculpture, video and sound, Monika Weiss restores historical memory to post-Third Reich Germany. One corner of the gallery in lined with books of German literature and philosophy, all published before or during the Second World War. Some represent the notorious burned books associated with Nazism's "degenerate art"; others, including texts by Goethe and Schiller, were celebrated by the Reich. In the corner, a video projection of flames climbs the wall. Miczenie, the Polish word for "silence" is here joined to Phlegethon, Virgil's river of fire, whose fire burns but does not consume.

Intended also as the ground for performance--in which Weiss lies surrounded by books drawing solitary human figures in pencil, crayon and charcoal--the installation's mournful, elegiac quality is a reminder of loss on an unimaginable scale."
